CROWNS AND ROSES

Gala raises $5,500 for group that aids Philippines' needy

Mikee Olegario was crowned Miss Valentine 2017 for her fundraising efforts toward the $5,500 total raised for Arkansas Medical Mission at its Feb. 11 gala at Four Points by Sheridan.

Money raised, generated partially from the selling of roses to partygoers, will provide humanitarian services to the poor and underserved in Panitan, Capiz, Philippines. Nentia Secuban, founder and chief executive officer of the nonprofit established in 2012, says the organization has provided free services every year to a different part of the Philippines. The medical missions provide services regardless of age, ethnicity, beliefs or political affiliation. In addition to the medical aid, says Secuban, they also provide hygiene supplies such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap; backpacks for children filled with school supplies; and toys for tots.

The evening included a dinner and program with remarks by Perla Gross and Secuban, followed by the coronation of Miss Valentine 2017, who received a crown and roses. Also in the running for Miss Valentine was Haley Tancinco.

About 72 guests were at the dinner and dance.
