State closes part of Arkansas 342

Work to eliminate hazards posed by a natural bluff on Arkansas 342 near Hardy in Sharp County has required a section of the highway to be closed until further notice, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

The section was closed Friday, eight days after several tons of rock broke loose from the bluffs and fell on the road. Agency personnel removed the debris and repaired the damage to the highway.

An examination of the bluff earlier this week found that more rocks could fall, prompting the closure of the highway to allow personnel to "conduct pre-emptive work without risk to motorists," the department said. "The roadway will open as soon as the hazards posed by the natural bluff have been mitigated."
