S.C. author, musician sets visit to UCA

CONWAY -- The author of the 2010 book The Savvy Musician will visit the University of Central Arkansas from Sunday through Tuesday as an artist in residence.

David Cutler, director of music entrepreneurship at the University of South Carolina, is also a classical and jazz composer, a pianist, an educator and a speaker.

While at UCA, Cutler "will be sharing strategies for managing the business side of a career" in areas such as marketing, branding and advertising while also providing strategies "for cultivating audiences and advocating for oneself and others," said Stefanie Dickinson, assistant professor of music theory and faculty sponsor at UCA.

"He realizes that the arts scene is changing and offers visionary ideas about adapting in order to maintain one's viability," Dickinson said in a UCA news release.

Cutler's events at UCA will target arts students, faculty and arts-minded community members, Dickinson said.

"Although his focus is on music, his strategies and ideas are relevant for all the arts," she said.

Cutler's most recent book, The Savvy Music Teacher, addresses "how to make a living as an independent teacher and how to make an impact in the arts," Dickinson said.

Cutler's events will be free and open to the public. They include a concert featuring his compositions performed by UCA music faculty in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall at 7:30 pm. Sunday. There also will be a presentation and question-and-answer session at 7 p.m. Monday at UCA Downtown, 1105 W. Oak St. in Conway.

A presentation titled "How Music Education Can Change the World (and Why It Often Doesn't)" will be held at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday at the recital hall. Another presentation will be held there at 1:40 p.m. It is titled "A Life in the Arts: Nine Big Ideas on Career and Financial Success."
