South Carolina Democrat and CNN political commentator Bakari Sellers will speak at Philander Smith College today.
The speech -- a part of the Bless the Mic series -- starts at 7 p.m. at M.L. Harris Auditorium on the college campus, 900 W. Daisy Bates Drive. Admission is free and open to the public. No reservations are required, and seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
In 2006, the 22-year-old Sellers defeated a 26-year incumbent to become a state representative in South Carolina, according to a news release. He became the youngest member of that state's Legislature and the youngest black elected official in the United States. The Morehouse College graduate has earned accolades, including being named to Time magazine's 40 Under 40 in 2010, 2014 and 2015.
