Naturalist discusses eagles

Bald eagles at Beaver Lake is the topic of Lunch and Learn at noon today at the Rogers Public Library. Joan Reynolds, a Northwest Arkansas master naturalist, will give the program. Patrons are invited to bring a sack lunch. Beverages are provided. Lunch and learn is held the second Tuesday of each month at the library, 711 S. Dixieland Road in Rogers.

Anglers ready to fish

Beaver Lake Guys and Gals bass tournament circuit will hold a preseason meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Golden Corral, 2605 W. Pleasant Crossing Drive, in Rogers. The group will hold tournaments at Beaver and Table Rock lakes, with one tournament at Grand Lake. The first tournament is March 19 out of Prairie Creek park at Beaver Lake. Volunteers sought

Volunteers are needed Saturday to help with a glade restoration project at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Shaddox Hollow Trail parking area on Arkansas

The work involves moving cedar trees uphill at the restoration site. Volunteers should bring gloves, water and wear sturdy shoes. Glades were more numerous at one time, but many have been choked out by encroaching red cedar trees.

Hike explores trail

The Ozark Highlands Trail Association will host a group hike Saturday on the Ozark Highlands Trail from East Fly Gap Road trailhead to Morgan Fields trailhead. The hike is 4.3 miles.

Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Harps store in Elkins for carpooling or at East Fly Gap Road trailhead at 10 a.m. All hikers are welcome.

Audubon plans trip

Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society will hold a Great Backyard Bird Count field trip at 9 a.m. Saturday at Devil’s Den State Park. Meet at the trailhead on the south side of the Lee Creek bridge.

The trip involves easy walking and counting birds. Data will be entered into the Great Backyard Bird Count national database.

The field trip will last two hours, but participants may come and go as needed. All are welcome. There’s no need to preregister. For more information call Joe Neal, 479-521-1858.

Lake cleanup set

Volunteers are needed to clean up an old dump site at Lincoln Lake on Feb. 25. Meet at the lake parking area at 8 a.m.

Work should take two to three hours. Bring work gloves, water and snacks. There are many small items to be picked up so children are welcome.

Hobbs hosts cruises

Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area offers eagle viewing cruises on Beaver Lake each Saturday and Sunday through February.

Trips are aboard the park’s 20-passenger pontoon bait. Cruises visit an area of Beaver Lake where bald eagles are commonly seen. Trips leave Rocky Branch Marina at 3 p.m.

Cost is $10 for adults plus tax or $6 for children 6-12. Reservations are required. Call the park visitor center, 479-789-5000.

Course teaches

The Leopold Education Project is open to all area environmental educators and will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 3 at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area.

The course is based on Aldo Leopold’s “Sand County Almanac” and stresses conservation and environmental teaching and critical thinking. School teachers, master naturalists, stream team leaders and others involved in environmental education are encouraged to sign up.

Fundraiser set

Buckmasters of Northwest Arkansas will hold its annual fundraiser banquet at 6 p.m. March 4 at the Rodeo Community Center in Springdale. Buckmasters provides free hunting trips to youngsters who are ill or to disabled veterans. Buckmasters also provides fishing trips, nature observation and target shooting.
