Basketball: Saints settle down, rally past West Fork

WEST FORK -- Shiloh Christian loves a fast brand of basketball. But with the way West Fork started Tuesday night, even the Saints decided slowing things down a bit was the best option.

After West Fork raced out to an early double-digit lead, Shiloh Christian turned to strong half-course defense and better patience on offense. The result for the Saints was a 59-53 come-from-behind win in 4A/3A District 1 play at the Tiger Dome.

"I think we settled down a little bit," Shiloh Christian boys basketball coach Jacob Skinner said. "They were amped up to start the game. It was Senior Night and they recognized like 200 people, and it was a game we had to settle down.

"We don't do that a lot. We want to push the pace and it was a half court game early. They leaked out on their defense some and they gave us some easy baskets. So we settled down and had a lot of kids step up."

Jackson Hutchinson led the Saints (14-10) with 28 points, hitting 13 of 18 free throws to help the cause.

On the other end, free throws and a pinned up offense cost West Fork (15-10) in the end.

"We just didn't make enough baskets," Tigers coach Cody Vaught. "And we missed way too many free throws, even there in the third quarter. That might now show up as much but those hurt you."

Shiloh Christian rallied for a 46-44 lead at the end of the third quarter, then fought off West Fork in the final minutes as the Tigers struggled to score down the stretch after pulling within 53-52.

"This was a big win for us," Skinner said. "We needed this one and we had a lot of kids, a lot of role guys, step up."

Jeff Treat led West Fork with 19 points and Dalton Hays added 17.
