FARMINGTON -- Brad Johnson turned to his bench to help turn back Providence Academy on Tuesday in nonconference action.

Farmington rallied from a first-half deficit to claim a 49-39 win in Cardinal Arena in a rare midseason nonconference game.

Junior Madison Parsley came off the Farmington bench to score 5 points, the biggest a 3-pointer as the third quarter expired to give Farmington (16-5) a 34-31 lead. The Lady Cardinals never trailed after Parsley's bucket from the right perimeter.

"That was huge," said Johnson. "Madison Parsley is a tremendous teammate. She works hard every single day. She's got a defined role on our basketball team and she's a classic example of a kid who's embraced it."

Farmington also got valuable minutes off the bench from sophomore Eliza Ball, who got her first varsity minutes on Tuesday night and collected several big rebounds and played solid defensively, Johnson said.

Freshman Makenna Vanzant led Farmington with 17 points, including 8 of 10 from the free-throw line.

The Lady Patriots (16-8) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Rachel Kash opened the game with a long 3-pointer and Providence Academy added back-to-back layups for the early lead.

"They came right out of the gate and hit a three, and I think their length and athleticism kind of took us back a little," Johnson said of Providence's quick start. "They're long and they can run. I think that bothered us. We had some turnovers that led to some bad fouls."

Hayley Kate Webb, who led all scorers with 19 points, helped Providence to the early lead by scoring 11 points in the first half as the Lady Patriots held a 24-21 lead at halftime.

Farmington took its first lead with 3 minutes, 45 seconds left in the third quarter when Camryn Journagan hit a baseline layup for a 27-26 lead. Providence later reclaimed the lead 31-28 in Webb's inside bucket, but Farmington scored the last six points of the third quarter on 3-pointers from Vanzant and Parsley.

Journagan's layup and free throw completed a three-point play with 58 seconds left that sealed the win for the Lady Cardinals.

"That is really a quality team win for us," Johnson said. "I was joking today, that if you're going to schedule a nonconference game in the middle of conference, I'd like for it to be a cupcake, and that's not what we got.

"I've kinda been dreading this game for a couple of weeks. That's a quality team. They've gone against a lot of teams in our league and had a lot of success."

Farmington will return to 5A/6A District 1 play at home on Friday against Greenwood.
