Armed stalker handed 130 years in terrorizing; Arkansas man shot ex-girlfriend

TEXARKANA — A Miller County man who shot a former girlfriend after stalking and terrorizing her for months received a 130-year prison sentence Tuesday as part of a plea bargain.

Curtis Theo Jones, 53, of Texarkana pleaded guilty to 11 felonies, including attempted murder, in connection with a Jan. 21, 2015, shooting in the victim’s garage in Texarkana and a December 2014 residential burglary of the victim’s home.

The woman acquired a temporary protective order Jan. 6, 2015, which forbid Jones from contacting her.

One of four shots Jones fired entered the victim’s thigh while the others tore through her coat and her car. Jones repeatedly entered the woman’s home without permission in the months prior, threatened the lives of her and her family, assaulted her and extorted money from her, court records show.

The woman said she was so desperate to be free of Jones that when he promised to leave her alone in exchange for $5,000, she went into accounts in which she was saving money for her children and took out a loan, but the harassment continued.

Jones received 30 years for attempted first-degree murder; 40 years for terroristic act for shooting and striking the victim’s thigh; and three 20-year sentences for terroristic act for three other shots fired at the victim. The sentences on those five counts, which total 130 years, will be served consecutively, Prosecuting Attorney Chuck Black said.

Four six-year terms for aggravated assault on a family or household member, a 20-year term for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, a 10-year term for solicitation involving Jones’ attempt to get someone to provide him a false alibi and a 20-year term for residential burglary will run concurrently to one another and concurrently to the 130-year combined terms on the first five charges.

Public Defender Matt Stephens said the plea agreement includes a promise from the state that charges will not be levied against Jones’ son, who dropped the defendant off near the victim’s home the day of the shooting.

Black said Jones will not be parole-eligible until he has served a minimum of 27 years.
