UA donors endow awards in physics

FAYETTEVILLE -- A new scholarship at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville will be established with a gift from a former physics student looking to honor a faculty mentor.

The Fui T. Chan and Kaiyuan Chen Endowed Research Scholarship is funded by a $50,000 gift from Chen and another $50,000 from Dallas-based Texas Instruments, his employer.

In a statement released by UA, Chen described the influence of Chan, his adviser on doctoral research.

"When I look back, it is clear that where I am today is because Dr. Chan selected me as his student 25 years ago," said Chen, who came to UA after working as a lecturer at Fudan University in China. Chan "needs to be remembered," he said.

After joining the UA faculty in 1969, Chan became a full professor in 1980 and retired in 2000. In a statement released by UA, Chan said, "I do hope that others follow Dr. Chen's generosity by providing more opportunities for young students who are starting to do research and encourage them as much as possible."

The scholarship will be awarded to undergraduate students with financial need who are working on research projects with physics faculty.
