Board picks firm for superintendent search

The School Board for the Pulaski County Special School District on Tuesday selected Ray and Associates Inc. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to help the district select a permanent superintendent for the 2018-19 school year and beyond.

The board is seeking a replacement for Jerry Guess, who was fired in July in a dispute over the 12,000-student district's legal representation in a long-running school desegregation lawsuit and in other matters.

Assistant Superintendent Janice Warren has been serving as interim chief executive officer. She said Tuesday that she has not decided whether to apply for the permanent position.

Ray and Associates recently assisted in the superintendent searches for the Fort Smith and Rogers school districts as well as for the Bentonville School Board, which ended up selecting interim Superintendent Debbie Jones.

The School Board had heard presentations from Ray and Associates and from McPherson and Jacobson of Omaha, Neb. Ray and Associates offered to do the search at a base cost of $16,500.

The company representatives who would assist in the search include National Executive Director William Newman of Mountain Home, Regional Search Director Carl Davis of Powder Springs, Ga., and Regional Search Associate Roy Brooks of Little Rock, who is a former Little Rock School District superintendent and former head of the eStem Public Charter Schools Inc.
