Highway section over dam to close

Maintenance by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a section of Arkansas 178 on Bull Shoals Dam in Marion County requires lane closings lasting through next fall, the Arkansas Department of Transportation said.

Both lanes of Arkansas 178 across Bull Shoals Dam are closed from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, weather permitting, to allow equipment needed to refurbish the dam gates to be staged. During this period, one lane will remain closed from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m., the department said.

Beginning Wednesday, the section of Arkansas 178 will be reduced to a single lane of traffic until next fall.

Additional road closings of up to two days will be set every four to eight weeks to allow the movement of equipment as work progresses, the department said. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers, signs and traffic cones.

Motorists using that route should allow extra time to reach their destinations, the department said.
