THE ELITE MEET

L'Elite celebrates 37 years nurturing college students

A close-knit group gathered Nov. 21 at the Butcher Shop to celebrate the founding of a club born in 1980, the year Ronald Reagan was elected president, the Pac-Man game was created, Mount St. Helens blew her top and oh yeah, nothing came between Brooke Shields and her Calvin Kleins.

L'Elite Inc., a small organization of black women from diverse backgrounds and professions, met for its Founder's Day celebration -- "In Times Like These." Jonnie Collier and Brenda Gilmore were recognized as two of the founders of the group, dedicated to nurturing college-age young women and helping them realize their full potential. Also acknowledged was Willye Talley, L'Elite president, who was unable to attend the meeting.

Member Edna Wade summarized the history of L'Elite, whose activities included 20 years of an annual scholarship pageant and six weeks of intense training with the young ladies. "So founders," said Wade, "we say to you tonight, thank you for having the vision. We've made significant contributions to our community, and we continue" in ways that include contributions to the United Negro College Fund and adopting families for Christmas.

Valerie Pruitt read a proclamation from Mayor Mark Stodola, establishing Nov. 21, 2017, as L'Elite Inc. Day in the city of Little Rock. Event speaker Al Bell, former record company executive and now with Al Bell Presents, lauded the ladies for their work and gave commentary on the issues affecting youth of today. "If we ever needed you before, we sure do need you now -- and God only knows how much, " he said.

The gathering also included a toast and the presentation of gifts.
