Basketball: Farmington struggles but wins against Huntsville

FARMINGTON -- Farmington won Saturday, but Cardinals coach Beau Thompson was far from satisfied.

A game that was mostly slow and sloppy ended with Farmington beating Huntsville 41-37 on the final day of the Tony Chachere's Class at Cardinal Arena. Farmington (5-4) finished second in the tournament behind Harding Academy, which went 3-0.

Huntsville (4-6): Siegrist 11, Shackelford 8, Mayes 7, Wilson 6, McCone 3, Whelchel 2.

Farmington (5-4): Maxwell 12, S. Montez 9, Staten 9, J. Montez 8, Valenzuela 3.

Farmington and Huntsville each missed free throws and committed turnovers down the stretch when the outcome was still in doubt. Peyton Maxwell finally secured the victory with two free throws to put the Cardinals ahead 41-35 with 12 seconds left.

Only a few claps from the stands could be heard at the buzzer that ended the game.

"We're happy to get the win but we've got to continue to get better," Thompson said. "They slowed the pace down and kept the game close. We had a few chances to get away with it, but we missed five straight free throws and just didn't put it away."

Maxwell scored 12 points to lead Farmington while Skyler Montez and Xavier Staten added nine apiece. Clay Siegrist had 11 for Huntsville (4-6) before he fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Farmington led 20-12 at halftime after Huntsville managed one basket and one free throw in the second quarter. Huntsville coach Jim Stafford called a timeout after three unforced turnovers, including two walking calls.

The pace picked up in the second half and Huntsville got to within 32-31 after three consecutive inside baskets by Siegrist, a senior forward. But Siegrist was called for his fifth foul with four minutes, 34 seconds left and the Eagles could not produce enough offense, even with the late struggles by Farmington.
