FAYETTEVILLE -- The temperature dropped into the teens as 26 Fayetteville High School Student Council members spent Thursday night huddled in cardboard boxes.

The annual homeless vigil began at 5 p.m. and ended early Friday morning. Students invited the community to stop by to donate money and canned, nonperishable food for the School District's Families in Transition program, which helps the homeless.

"We stayed there all night, and it was the coldest year yet," said council Treasurer Ty West, who participated for his third year.

Students set a goal of raising $20,000, West said. The tally at the end of the event was $13,000, he said. Money will continue to be collected through Jan. 1.

Contributions can be mailed to Michelle Fyfe, FHS Student Council, 994 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., 72701.
