Coach not mad about 102-0 loss

Golfer Louis Oosthuizen withdrew from this week’s Johannesburg Open after suffering an unusual injury that prevents him from gripping his clubs.
Golfer Louis Oosthuizen withdrew from this week’s Johannesburg Open after suffering an unusual injury that prevents him from gripping his clubs.

It was a mismatch of epic proportions in northeastern Montana.

The Froid-Medicine Lake Redhawks girls basketball team not only scored more than 100 points in a victory over the Brockton Warriors, they also posted a shutout.

Tuesday's 102-0 victory was not completely unprecedented, but it is rare.

"My girls did everything possible to score," Brockton Coach Terrence Johnson told the Great Falls Tribune.

So how did this happen?

Brockton's roster was whittled down to five players by sickness and other absences. Johnson said the five players were an eighth-grader, a freshman who had "never really played ball until this year," a sophomore who hadn't played since sixth grade and two other sophomores.

None were above 5-7. Froid-Medicine Lake had three players taller than 6 feet.

Brockton went from a full starting five down to four players early in the second half because of an ankle injury. It trailed 59-0 at halftime, and not even a second-half running clock could prevent Froid-Medicine Lake from getting to the century mark.

"I'm not sure if we even hit double figures in field-goal attempts," Johnson said of his team.

Still, there's the question of why the game was allowed to get this out of hand. Johnson told the Great Falls Tribune he and his players weren't unhappy with their opponents. But something probably should have been done.

Froid-Medicine Lake Coach Lance Brekke, speaking to the Tribune, seemed to agree.

"This will never happen again, that's for sure," he said. "The integrity of the game just went out the window."

Shutouts in basketball are rare and sometimes controversial. One infamous instance, in 2009 in Dallas, saw a girls high school game end 100-0. Afterward, the winning coach was fired.

There were two girls games in Arkansas on Tuesday night that were extremely lopsided -- Earle defeated KIPP Delta 73-1 and Dumas defeated Dollarway 60-1.

There doesn't seem to be any ill will after the 102-0 Montana game. Johnson didn't seem to blame anybody. And he certainly wasn't unhappy with his own players.

"They did nothing wrong," he told the Tribune. "At the end of the day, they all went home and asked: 'What's for dinner, Mom?' "

Can't compete

Louis Oosthuizen has pulled out of this week's Johannesburg Open after a freak accident that will go down as one of sports' more unusual injuries.

The 2010 British Open champion hurt his fingers when they were caught between two airport trolleys as he returned to South Africa from competing at the Mauritius Open this past weekend.

Oosthuizen, who is in severe pain and unable to grip his clubs, said he did not want to risk starting a tournament he could not finish and deny another player the chance to compete.

"This morning is even worse than it was yesterday, so I tried to grip a golf club but there's no way I can go to my grip position," he said in a news conference Wednesday. "It's a bit of an unfortunate one, but I don't want to tee off [today] and play one hole or a few shots and then withdraw after taking someone's spot. You know, I just can't do that. So, I'm going to have to withdraw from this one."
