Springdale Har-Ber second at Carthage (Mo.) tourney

The Lady Wildcats won a pair of games in the Carthage (Mo.) Tournament and advanced to the championship game, where they fell to Mount Vernon, Mo., 60-48.

"I am pleased with the way our team battled in spurts," said Har-Ber coach Jamie Green. "However, for us to finish games with wins the way we are capable of, we have to have an unwavering commitment to win the 50-50 balls."

Green pointed to rebounding and free throws as other areas the Lady Wildcats (3-3) need to improve on as the nonconference season moves forward.

"Hustle plays are what make the difference," Green said. "We have the talent, now we need to add the killer instinct mentality to finish teams off when we get in a position to do so."

Senior guard Maci Manes scored 20 points to lead Har-Ber in Saturday's championship game. Savanna Collins and Sophie Nelson scored 7 points each and Collins added 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Har-Ber will be off until Thursday when it opens play in the Broken Arrow (Okla.) Tournament.

Boys

Bentonville West 65, Willard, Mo. 54

West outscored Willard 19-8 in the fourth quarter to secure the win Saturday and complete a three-game sweep at the Tri-State Hoops Classic in Willard.

Collier Blackburn had 19 points to lead a trio of West players in double figures, followed by Gabe Hornsby with 14 and Collin Blackburn with 12. Collier Blackburn, Hornsby and teammate Dillon Bailey were named to the all-tournament team.

Bentonville lost to Salina, Kan., and host Jay, which finished 1-2 in the team standings. The Tigers were missing at least six wrestlers, who were playing in the Class 7A state championship football game on Saturday. In addition, Josiah Scates (106) was also unbeaten but didn't wrestle all nine duals. Freshman Blake Wolff lost just once, and that came when he bumped up a weight class.
