VAN BUREN -- The first monument to be erected in the United States honoring the memory of the first Americans killed in France in the world war, is being erected in Van Buren. It is being built at the personal expense of Col. Sam R. Chew of this city. It is of concrete, which will be given a marble polish and finished in white cement, making it as durable as granite. It will bear the following inscription: "To the memory of Mere D. Hay, James B. Gresham, Thomas Enright; they were the first members of the expeditionary army of the United States in France to die that we might live."

CONWAY -- The Arkansas Children's Colony has received a $595,000 check from the Economic Development Administration as the first disbursement on a $1.4 million federal grant. The EDA grant for construction at the Colony was awarded in December, 1966, by the EDA, which listed Faulkner County as eligible for emergency relief because of chronic unemployment. Construction, which will raise the Colony's capacity from 768 to 1,036 was started last June. The grant is being matched by state funds.

• A Little Rock martial arts expert accused of raping his estranged wife was jailed Monday when a judge revoked his bond for allegedly harassing his wife's family. "It's constant harassment," Jeff Gibson's mother-in-law, Gail Williams of North Little Rock, told Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza. Gibson is accused of breaking windows, kicking in doors, throwing paint on a vehicle, and cutting telephone lines at his in-laws' home between Sept. 10 and Nov. 21. He will remain jailed until his rape trial Dec. 18.

• A 27-year-old Little Rock man was convicted Friday for shooting out the window of a Little Rock pizza restaurant despite a neighbor's claim he was at home in his "little ducky pajamas" around the time of the gunfire. The guilty verdict by Pulaski County Circuit Judge John Langston comes a month after the judge found Wayne Allen Dierks Jr. guilty of committing a terroristic act for shooting a crossbow at a fellow motorist. Langston handed Dierks his second terroristic act conviction after a bench trial Friday for the Jan. 20 shooting at Pizza D'Action.
