OFF TO A GOOD START

Sweethearts' year of service starts with social, reception

"Don't forget to RSVP." That admonition has come to be a slogan of sorts when it comes to the various activities of the American Heart Association of central Arkansas' Sweethearts.

The association welcomed a new class of 10th-grade girls at a welcome reception Aug. 16 at the Arkansas Governor's Mansion. Over the course of their tenure, the young ladies devote their time and talent to a monthslong program that not only teaches them about heart health awareness but also trains them to be agents of change in an area (Pulaski County) in which nearly 29 percent of deaths are attributed to heart disease.

Accompanied by parents, the 21st class of sweethearts -- 74 strong, with 22 legacies -- gathered to mingle, nibble light hors d'oeuvres and pick up their program books. They then took their seats for remarks by Heart Ball director Tammy Quick, Arkansas first lady Susan Hutchinson, 2018 Heart Ball co-chairman Doris Washington and Sweetheart co-chairmen Sandy Bradley, Michele Linch and Melisa Smock Clouette. (Co-chairman Laurie Worsham was introduced in absentia.) Sweethearts co-founder Eileen Sotomora discussed the benefits of the program and its awards for outstanding volunteers.

As is custom, graduates of the previous class donned appropriate attire to highlight the coming Sweetheart activities, including a sleepover, a mother-daughter tea and hospital volunteer opportunities. And yes, they were reminded to RSVP.

The Sweethearts will be presented during the Heart Ball, scheduled for March 10.
