Older bro's 'joke' spelled out on jersey

Seattle’s Kyle Seager (15) said he was joking at ÿrst when he submitted “Corey’s Brother” as his Players Weekend nickname, in a nod to his younger sibling Corey Seager, who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

As it turns out, arguably the best nickname from Players Weekend was written down without actually thinking anyone would see it.

Kyle Seager, the Seattle Mariners' third baseman, turned heads across the league when Players Weekend jerseys were released featuring "Corey's Brother" as his nickname -- a nod to his sibling, Corey Seager, who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"It was a joke right out of the beginning," Kyle Seager told MLB Network Radio. "I didn't think they were actually going to put it on the jersey, and it's actually been pretty funny."

While the 29-year-old Kyle Seager took the field with one of the best nicknames in the league, his brother Corey, 23, opted to keep it simple and wear just "Seager." Kyle explained why the Dodgers shortstop opted not to get in on the family fun.

"I asked him about it, and he basically said he didn't know I was going to do anything," Kyle said. "I didn't tell him anything, I was hoping it just kind of came out day of. And then it came out a few weeks earlier, you know, he pretty much told me that I got lucky that he didn't know we were doing this."

It's not often that a player on the precipice of his sixth consecutive 20-home run season is faced with a brother who may be even better, but such is the case with the Seager siblings.

"It's been incredible. You knew really early with Corey that he was really, really talented," Kyle said. "In 2011, I had just gotten called up and was working with my brothers in the offseason, trying to tell them about some of the stuff I'd learned and all this other stuff. And Corey just had a knack for picking things up.

"You know, we're throwing and he's throwing faster than me. We're running and he's running faster than me. And then we start hitting and he's already hitting it better than me and he's in high school. I'm like, 'Well, this isn't good, my high school brother is better than me and I just got called up to the big leagues.' "

BFFs?

Are Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook friends? Yes, according to the Golden State Warriors star forward.

In a recent edition of the Bill Simmons Podcast, Durant said he and Westbrook are still friends, they just don't happen to talk all that often.

"I don't think we ever stopped being friends," Durant told Simmons. "We just stopped talking, but I don't think we stopped being friends."

Simmons asked whether KD and Westbrook are speaking again.

"Not talking, nah, but I mean, I don't think any ... there's no problems," Durant said. "But I don't think we ever stopped being friends."

Fight night

From Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com:

"Shame that [the] Yankees [and the] Tigers are done playing for the season. At this point, fans might pay more for a rematch than Mayweather McGregor."
