HOT SPRINGS -- Robert L. Williams, aged 68 years, who for the greater part of 22 years served as mayor or sheriff of Garland county, tonight while lying on a couch in his room in the Williams residence on Grand Avenue, sent a bullet through his head. Death was instantaneous. He gave no intimation of his intention to end his life. Those who saw him today said he was in an exceptionally cheerful mood.

• Three convicts who escaped recently from the Arkansas Penitentiary system have been recaptured, Col. Lynn A. Davis, director of the State Police, said Friday. James Perry Williams, 43, serving a life sentence for murder, kidnapping and grand larceny, was captured Friday morning, about two and a half hours after he escaped from a meat house at Cummins Prison Farm. Clyde Griffin, 18, of Phoenix, Ariz., who escaped Wednesday while undergoing an examination at the State Hospital at Little Rock, was caught Thursday night at Bastrop, La., by Bastrop policemen.

• Bond was denied Tuesday for three teen-agers charged in the slaying Aug. 14 of a convenience store clerk. North Little Rock Municipal Judge Joel Cole ordered Eli Esau, 16, and Marcus Lakeith Smith, 17, both of Little Rock, and Jonathan Hill, 16, of North Little Rock held without bond. A public defender was appointed to represent the defendants, who waived their right to a preliminary hearing. Their cases were transferred to Circuit Court. The police say they anticipate arresting a fourth person in the shooting death of Michael Giles, 31, of North Little Rock.

• Vehicle accidents claimed the lives of three people around the state since late Thursday, police reported. A North Little Rock man died early Saturday when his car collided with a pickup on John F. Kennedy Boulevard, police said. Cyle Boykins, 20, was driving an Oldsmobile Cutlass south on JFK Boulevard in North Little Rock about 8 a.m. when, police said, the car jerked into the northbound lanes and collided with a Ford F-150 driven by Roberta Clark, 36, of North Little Rock. The pickup slammed through Boykins' car, police said, killing him. Clark suffered minor injuries, police said.
