Expect traffic snarls for I-49 lane closings

LOWELL — Crews constructing ramps for the U.S. 412 Northern Bypass will require overnight lane closings on Interstate 49 through the end of the month.

Weather permitting, lanes on I-49 will be closed between Wagon Wheel Road, exit 76, in Springdale and Arkansas 264, exit 78, in Lowell, according to Arkansas Department of Transportation officials. Traffic will be controlled using signs and traffic barrels.

The inside lane of north and south I-49 will alternately be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday to allow the contractor to place a concrete deck over the interstate.

The inside and outside lanes of northbound and southbound I-49 will alternately be closed from 8 p.m.to 6 a.m. Wednesday through Sept. 2 to allow the contractor to hang bridge safety platforms. One lane will be closed at a time, and if required, workers will close all lanes for 15-minute intervals.

The $100.6 million project is part of the department’s Connecting Arkansas Program. The project is expected to be completed mid-2018.
