Photographers, poet combine in Wichita Mountains exhibit

MORRILTON -- "We're Not Telling You Everything, Words and Images From the Wichita Mountains," on display this month at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute, is a collaboration with photographers Don House and Sabine Schmidt and poet Sy Hoahwah. An opening reception was Aug. 3 at the institute.

House noted during a tour of the exhibition that there was some apprehension about the collaboration as his and Schmidt's styles are so different, particularly in regard to format and color. He works in black-and-white and she in color. So, he said, the two divided the project into what they each do best. His photography focused on the people of the Wichita Mountains area while she photographed landscapes "as they've been used or changed by people."

The pair photographed the area in southwest Oklahoma over three years. Not the Ouachitas, says Schmidt about the mountain range. "People think we are mispronouncing it," she said. The Wichita Mountains is one of the oldest ranges in North America and home to a national wildlife refuge.

The images are on display in the institute's Flagstone Foyer and Show Barn Hall, along with poetry by Hoahwah through the end of August.
