Mural topic

at museum

Cheri Coley and LaNita McKinney, members of the Marion Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will present a program titled, "The World War I Mural at the Historic Washington County Courthouse," at noon Wednesday at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale.

In 1920, the Marion Chapter commissioned New York artist William Steene to paint an 8-by-36-foot mural to honor Washington County servicemen who died during World War I.

The Shiloh Museum, located at 118 W. Johnson Avenue in downtown Springdale, hosts a Sandwiched In noon program every month.

Quilts sought

for Shiloh fair

Entries are being accepted for the 40th Ozark Quilt Fair, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale.

Quilters and quilt lovers are invited to display new and antique quilts for show and sale on the museum grounds. The entry fee is $10 per exhibitor.

Cash prize Viewer's Choice awards will be given for first ($50), second ($35), and third ($15) place winners in both new and antique quilt categories.

Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Sept. 6. Entry forms are available at the museum website, shilohmuseum.org, or by calling (479) 750-8165. The Ozark Quilt Fair is sponsored by Arvest Bank.

Blood Center

seeks donors

Current reserves are at three-day levels, except for type O negative, which is at less than a two-day reserve level. All donors, especially type O negative, are urged to give this week. On average, a transfusion takes place every seven minutes, and around 220 donations are needed each day to meet the area's blood needs.

Community Blood Center of the Ozarks will host blood drives at the following locations:

Music for Meals

set in Elkins

Music for Meals will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 26 at Elkins Community Center. The event will feature bluegrass and country music by White River Junction, Thorny Creek Ramblers and Jim Harvey with Jerry Stahl and kids. Woody with KIX 104 will emcee the event, which will include a silent auction and raffle of a fiddle handcrafted by Arnold Lane. Tickets are $10 and include a meal and drink. Children 12 and younger are free. Raffle tickets are $2 each or six for $10.

Proceeds benefit the Elkins Senior Activity and Wellness Center Meals on Wheels.

Friends hold

golf tourney

Friends of Dogwood is holding the first golf tournament fundraiser with an 8 a.m. shotgun on Sept. 4 at Dogwood Golf Course on Bella Vista's east side.

Proceeds from this tournament will support, promote, enhance and beautify both the Dogwood and Brittany golf courses. The 18-hole, two-person scramble is open to the public with a $30 entry fee plus cost of golf.

Museum aids

in creativity

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, in collaboration with the Alzheimer's Association and the Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education, will present Creative Connections, a program for individuals in the early stages of Alzheimer's or related dementia and their care partners. Museum educators facilitate interactive discussions of artworks in the galleries followed by hands-on art activities in the studio. No prior art experience is required.

The 2017 fall series of Creative Connections will begin from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Registration is required, as space is limited. Classes will continue to meet throughout September, October and November.

trip to Italy

Individuals wanting to learn more about a planned travel adventure to historic Siena, Italy, and surrounding areas in 2018 are invited to attend an information session at 6 p.m. Aug. 30 in Room 108 of the Becky Paneitz Student Center on Northwest Arkansas Community College's Bentonville campus.

The NWACC Foundation and Ten Days in Tuscany are partnering to provide a unique travel opportunity for interested travelers. Miles Fish, a professor of music and NWACC in Italy (Siena) School Director, will host the June 8-17, 2018, trip to Tuscany. He and his wife have been summer residents of Siena for the past 17 years.

Red Cross

seeks blood

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals are partnering with the American Red Cross on a blood drive in August. An emergency call for blood and platelet donations was issued due to a current shortage.

Each person that donates blood or platelets to the American Red Cross through Aug. 15 will receive a voucher for two free dugout premium tickets to the Naturals' game on Aug. 22 against the Springfield (Mo.) Cardinals. The voucher will need to be turned into the Arvest Ballpark Box Office in advance or on the day of the game, when it will be exchanged for the best available seats.

Learn the role artillery played in the Battle of Pea Ridge when Pea Ridge National Military Park staff members blank fire a reproduction Model 1841 6-pound gun behind the park visitor center. Programs are at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Programs last approximately 20 minutes and are subject to weather.

Demonstration dates include Aug. 26, Sept. 2, Sept. 23, Oct. 7 and Oct. 21.
