TOPS 297

TOPS meets every Monday at Riordan Hall in Bella Vista. Weigh-in starts at 8:15 a.m., and the meeting begins at 9 a.m. Take Off Pounds Sensibly is a support group for people who want to lose weight following a sensible diet. The meeting is also for those who have lost weight and struggle to keep it off: KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). The group recently installed new officers. The new leader is Jean Hehl.

Squares

The Kingsdale Squares will dance at 7 p.m., Monday at Riordan Hall in Bella Vista. Kenton Sullivan will be the caller. There will be a mainstream workshop at 6:30 p.m. prior to the dance.

Computers

Home networking will be discussed at the Bella Vista Computer Club meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in Room A at Highlands Crossing Center, 1801 Forest Hills Blvd. in Bella Vista.

Presenter Joel Ewing will explain the terminology of networks and the hardware that can enable home network-enabled devices to talk to each other and share a single internet interface.

Legion 341

Bella Vista American Legion Post 341 will meet at 5 p.m. Monday at the Post Hall, 1889 Bella Vista Way in Bella Vista. The meeting will feature a cook-out honoring the Boys State and Girls State participants who were sponsored by the Post. A general membership meeting will follow the cook-out.

In addition to meetings, the Post hosts "Coffee With the Commander" for members on the first and third Saturdays of each month. On the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, a breakfast buffet is available to members and the public.

Lunches at the Post are served Tuesday through Friday each week from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and are open to members and the public.

Additionally, the Post hosts a very well received "Taco Tuesday" each week followed by a "Fish Friday." Wednesday nights are devoted to trivia contests for members and the public with Thursday nights karaoke. For those desiring meals on these days, the restaurant features an excellent, casual-themed menu.

Saturday evenings are dance nights open to the public starting at 7 p.m. These evenings feature local musical groups. Food on Saturdays is limited to hamburgers and accompaniments available from 4 to 7 p.m. The meeting hall is open to the public for rental on an as-available basis.

Hill Hikers

The Ozark Hill Hikers, affiliated with the American Volkssport Association, will walk at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista, 1880 Forest Hills Blvd.

The next scheduled 5K/10K walk will be Aug. 19 with registration at 8 a.m. at Krispy Kreme, 1502 S.E. Walton Blvd. in Bentonville.

Democrats

The Senior Democrats of Northwest Arkansas will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Western Sizzlin' restaurant, 3492 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. Josh Mahoney of Fayetteville, the announced Democratic candidate for the 3rd Congressional District, will speak.

Mahoney, a nonprofit organizer in Northwest Arkansas, has rolled out his campaign with a "Listening Tour of the District" starting in the spring. He and his wife, Rhianon DeLeeuw, have been traveling the district over the past four months talking with voters about issues such as health care, immigration and individual liberty.

Democrats from Benton, Carroll, Madison and Washington counties are invited to attend.

The Bella Vista Sunrise Rotary will meet at 7 a.m. Wednesday at Concordia in Bella Vista. Lori Tudor, Arkansas Highway Department deputy commissioner and chief operating officer, will be the guest speaker. All guests are welcome to attend. Breakfast starts at 6:45 a.m.

Ostomates

The Northwest Arkansas Ostomy Support Group will meet at 2:15 p.m. Aug. 20 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. The informational/educational portion of the meeting will begin at 1 p.m. in the main meeting room.

This month's meeting will feature Cat Swensen discussing the benefits of fermentation.

Orchid Society

The Orchid Society of the Ozarks will meet at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. The speaker will be Glen Decker of Piping Rock Orchids in Galaway, N.Y. He will speak from his 20-year experience growing paphiopedilums and phragmipediums and will bring plants to sell.

Anyone interested in growing orchids is welcome to attend.

The objective of the society is to stimulate interest in orchids and their culture. Monthly raffles for members and the upcoming Sept. 17 public auction offer affordable orchids and supplies for new and experienced growers.

Photographers

The Photographic Society of Northwest Arkansas and guests will gather to photograph the total solar eclipse on Aug. 21, traveling to the heart of the eclipse path to view it.

Meet at Bloomfield's Family Restaurant in Marshall, Mo., for breakfast before heading to the Great Circle (Main Campus). The eclipse is scheduled to begin at 11:43 a.m. with the peak hitting about 1:10 p.m.

A special filter will be needed to photograph the eclipse. Attempting to photograph the eclipse without a special filter or special filter paper will result in significant damage to your lens and camera. Proper eyewear or a pinhole viewer is also necessary to view the eclipse. PSNWA is not responsible or liable for any physical damage or damage to camera equipment due to lack of proper filters or eye protection.

Cost is free to members and $10 to nonmembers.

Cancer Buddies

Hope Cancer Resources partners with The Buddy Project to facilitate a six-week art group for patients with any type of cancer. Members will create a collage of their personal cancer journey. A light meal and all supplies needed for the project will be provided. The next group will meet every Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 7 to Oct. 12 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave in Springdale.

Children's Lives Include Moments of Bravery is a Children's Treehouse Foundation family support group that helps children ages 6 to 12 cope with and share feelings about a parent or loved one who has cancer.
