• The ghost of his dead mother haunts Garland Ashley, aged 12, who is living at the Juvenile Detention Home. He thought he saw her in a crowd on Main street Thursday night. He did not return to the home at bedtime and late at night, when he was met at the door he was shivering, his face was ghastly white. "I saw mamma," he said, when questioned as to why he had been out so late. "She was all dressed in white. I got so scared I couldn't walk home," he told Mrs. J. Erickson, probation officer.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Circuit Judge Maupin Cummings approved Wednesday Springdale's annexation of 400 acres near the Bethel Heights community in Benton County. Springdale, in Washington County, was the principal city in mind when the 1967 legislature passed a bill to allow a city to annex land across a county line. The annexation involved 61 residents, and previously had been approved by Benton County Judge Sherman Kinyon.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Fayetteville Police said Monday they are awaiting results from the state Crime Laboratory to determine whether a Fayetteville man charged with a Springdale murder is a suspect in a double homicide here Aug. 1. "We have several individuals we're looking at kinda hard," Fayetteville Police Lt. Rick Hoyt said. "We're not ready to call anyone a suspect at this time." Blood, hair, and saliva samples were taken from Jeffery Scott Thomas, 20, after a neighbor of the slain couple, Montgomery and Rebecca Overbo, picked Thomas out of a photograph lineup as having been at the Overbos' home two days before their bodies were discovered there.

PINE BLUFF -- A Pine Bluff man accused of killing one person and injuring two others in a shootout in the parking lot of a nightclub Friday morning has been arrested on charges of murder and battery. Brandon Roberts, 20, is accused in the shooting death of Marquis Borders, 28. Police said he fired a semiautomatic handgun into a crowd about 3:40 a.m. in the parking lot of the Three Gables Nightclub at 3003 W. Pullen St. Witnesses, including Roberts' mother, told police Roberts fired the shots during a shootout with Borders, said Cymber L. Tadlock, a deputy prosecuting attorney for the 11th Judicial District West.
