Overnight lane closings for I-49 planned for in Benton County

LOWELL — Highway construction work will require overnight lane closings all week on Interstate 49 in Lowell, Rogers and Springdale, according to Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department officials.

Beginning Monday night, crews will pave north and south on I-49 and remove barrier walls. The inside and outside lanes will alternately be closed from Wagon Wheel Road, Exit 76, to New Hope Road, Exit 83, to allow for construction.

The overnight closings will occur through Saturday morning, weather permitting. Traffic will be controlled using signs and barrels.

• North I-49 lane closings will occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

• South I-49 lane closings will occur between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The $38.7 million project is part of the Connecting Arkansas Program and includes widening 5 miles of I-49 to three lanes in each direction. The work extends from Arkansas 264 in Lowell to New Hope Road in Rogers, and it is expected to be complete in late 2017.

Crews will place bridge beams over I-49 at Lowell that will require closing all lanes in both directions for multiple 15-minute periods, according to officials.

Weather permitting, lanes will be periodically closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Tuesday through Friday. Lanes will be closed between Wagon Wheel Road, Exit 76, in Springdale and Arkansas 264, Exit 78. Traffic control will be handled by Arkansas State Police.

Advance warning signs will be placed to notify traffic approaching the closing. The public is advised to be cautious if traveling in this work zone and are encouraged to find alternative routes to avoid the interstate closing. Traffic will be stopped before the exits to allow vehicles to exit.

The project is part of the Connecting Arkansas Program and constructs about 4 miles of the new four-lane U.S. 412 Northern Bypass, which extends from I-49 to Arkansas 112. The highway will provide a principal eastwest route north of Springdale. More information on this $100.6 million project is available at ConnectingArkansasProgram.com.
