NWA Democrat-Gazette/ANNETTE BEARD Aaron Campbell of Gravette was one of the finalists in the boys pole vault Tuesday during the meet.

The Gentry senior pole vaulter wants to clear 15 feet before his high school career is done, and he came closer to that mark Tuesday afternoon. Cripps cleared a personal-best 14-10 to easily win the event during the 4A-1 Conference track championships at Blackhawk Stadium.

"I knew I had to do it for my grandpa, ever since he passed away," Cripps said. "I've pushed myself one step closer to where I need to be."

Cripps admitted he didn't have much energy left as he competed in the triple jump -- where he won that event with a jump of 42-11 -- before he entered the pole vault. He was helped, however, with a strong breeze to his back as he competed in the event, and he was all alone once the bar was raised to 12 feet.

That's when he decided to go for 14-10, which is 4 inches higher than the height he cleared to win the Class 4A state meet last year. He did nudge the bar on his third and final attempt at that height, but it stayed in its place.

He was almost out of breath at that point, but he went ahead and tried to clear 15 feet, only to miss all three attempts. He said he's hopeful to get to 16 feet soon in order to walk on at Arkansas.

"I'm pretty excited about it," Cripps said. "It means a lot to me. It's pushed me ahead of all those other guys in Class 4A and the other guys across the state, so I'm excited about where that will place me when I get there."

Gravette claimed both conference titles, but it had to come from behind to do such a feat. In the girls division, the Lady Lions compiled 171 to 142 edge over second-place Pea Ridge, but they didn't enjoy the lead until the 800-meter run.

Gravette claimed a one-two finish in that event as Sally Bird turned in a winning time of 2 minutes, 46.97 seconds, followed by teammate Gracie Berger at 2:47.36 while Tori Foster finished seventh. The Lady Lions placed three runners in the 200 and two more in the 3,200, then capped it by winning the 4x400 relay with the team of Teagan Dixon, Kyrstin Branscum, Bird and Berger in 4:37.17.

"Kudos to Pea Ridge because she pulled some kids out of somewhere," Gravette coach Jana Hardgrave said. "We had to work really hard to get the lead. It was a team effort from a great group of girls.

"It was fun, and it's been a fun year. These kids lost the conference title to Pea Ridge by one point in junior high, so I know they hadn't forgotten that. They wanted to come in and win this, and everybody did exactly what they needed to do."

Gravette's boys trailed Gentry for more than half of the meet but pulled out the team title with 156.5 points, while Pea Ridge edged Gentry for the runner-up spot by a slim 119-117.5 margin.

Senior Alex Fink, who took the boys high-point award with 46.5 points, was a huge reason the Lions pulled ahead. He put Gravette ahead to stay with his win in the 400 (52.06 seconds), then came back and won the 200 in 23.52 seconds before running the final leg on the Lions' winning 4x400 relay team.

"For us, it's all been about winning this meet," Fink said. "We knew we were close, and we hadn't won a conference meet since my freshman year. It was all about points for the team, not personal records.

"The 800 guys stepped up big and scored double-digit points in that event. The 400 is usually my best race, but I was feeling pretty tired during that one; I won't lie. The 200, I was just glad to pull that one out because my team needed it."
