Salt Bowl moved to Sept. 2

The Salt Bowl game between Saline County rivals Benton and Bryant will be played Saturday, Sept. 2, at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, the Salt Bowl committee announced in a news release Wednesday.

The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 1, but Little Rock Catholic is scheduled to host Sylvan Hills at War Memorial Stadium on that day. Catholic's home football games are played at War Memorial Stadium. Also, the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville is playing Florida A&M at War Memorial on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Kickoff for the Salt Bowl is scheduled for 7 p.m. Activities surrounding the Salt Bowl will be announced at a later date.

Bryant won last year's Salt Bowl 10-7 in front of 30,613. Both Bryant and Benton advanced to the state semifinals in 2016, Bryant in Class 7A and Benton in Class 6A.

ASU men hire assistant coach

Arkansas State men's Coach Mike Balado announced the hiring of Vince Walden as an assistant coach Wednesday.

Walden, who has 17 years of coaching experience, was the national team head coach at the IMG Basketball Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He led the Ascenders to a 28-2 record and an appearance in the Dick's Sporting Goods High School Nationals as the No. 2 seed on his way to being named a Naismith Trophy High School Boys Coach of the Year finalist.

ASU 5th, UALR 6th at SBC Championship

The Arkansas State University women's team finished in fifth place, while the University of Arkansas at Little Rock women's team finished in a tie for sixth place with South Alabama on Wednesday at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

The Red Wolves shot a 294 as a team to finish at 36-over 900 for the tournament, one shot better than the Trojans, who shot a 305 Wednesday to finish with a 901 total. Troy University won the team title after shooting a 14-over 878.

UALR's Shania Berger shot a 3-over 75 in the final round to finish in fifth place with a 2-over 218 total. ASU's Beth Ann Compton shot a 1-under 71 to finish in a tie for seventh place at 4-over 220.
