PINE BLUFF -- At a big gathering of business men and planters representing all sections of the county, held at the Chamber of Commerce rooms today, an organization was perfected for waging a county-wide crusade in Jefferson county to increase the amount of food crops this year and during the war. Many big planters were present, including a number of the largest cotton growers of this part of the state. The interest they showed in the plans to have Jefferson county feed itself during the war gave evidence that the food crusade will be a success.

• North Little Rock has paid a local architectural firm, co-owned by the chairman of the city Sewer Committee, more than $200,000 during the past eight years. "I don't think they're giving it (jobs) to me because I'm on the committee," Kenneth "Buck" Matthews said Friday. "Would you rather for them to give it to someone in Little Rock who doesn't pay any taxes over here? Why shouldn't I get the business over here?" A review of city records Friday indicates Burt Taggart & Associates Inc., an architectural and engineering firm, has been hired by the city to work on seven projects since Matthews' term on the committee began.

• A $122 million boost in per-student funding and $456 million set aside for school facilities are among the measures legislators have passed that address remaining issues in the long-running Lake View school-funding case, attorneys for the state and school districts said in a joint report Thursday. The state and the schools said the funding increases and several other bills signed into law during the session that ended last week address issues raised in a previous joint report filed by both sides. A conference with attorneys in the lawsuit is scheduled for Tuesday before special masters Bradley Jesson and David Newbern.
