The mourning dove is named for its soft, mournful, cooing song. Its nonaggressive habits validate the use of the dove as a symbol of peace.

There is a Ukrainian folk tale about a little girl who, on the first cold morning of winter, found a nearly frozen dove huddling in snow. She took it indoors to warm and feed.

With its slender, pointed tail feathers and smallish head, the mourning dove is commonly seen in Arkansas.
