Little Rock, Maumelle artists chosen for exhibition

39 Arkansans in Arts Center show

David Bailin did it again.

The Little Rock artist is among the 39 Arkansas artists chosen for the 59th annual Delta Exhibition, a regional art competition at the Arkansas Arts Center.

Dennis and Jason McCann, father and son from Maumelle, were also among the Arkansas residents chosen.

Betsy Bradley, director of the Mississippi Museum of Art, is the juror for this year's Delta Exhibition. She chose 73 works by 57 artists from seven states. They were selected from 1,120 entries submitted by 497 artists.

Bradley will name a $2,500 Grand Award and two $750 Delta Award winners. A $250 Contemporaries Delta Award will be chosen by the Contemporaries, an auxiliary membership group of the Arkansas Arts Center.

In a news release, Arts Center Executive Director Todd Herman described the annual exhibition as a showcase for "the dynamic vision of the artists of the Mississippi Delta region."

The exhibition opens June 9 and continues through Aug. 27.

The Delta Exhibition was founded in 1958 as a showcase for contemporary works by artists born in or currently living in Arkansas and bordering states. The exhibition is open to works of all media.

Bailin has been a formidable presence in the Delta Exhibition since his first work was accepted in 1986. He won an honorable mention the next year, and the first of his three Grand Awards, the exhibition's top award, in 1988 for a charcoal and oil on canvas work, Anticipated Exile.

He also won in 1998 for Cain, charcoal on paper, and in 2014 for a charcoal, oil, pastel and coffee work titled Slippage.

Bailin won a Delta Award in 2016 for his charcoal, pastel and coffee on prepared paper work LAMP and also won Delta Awards in 1994, 1996 and 2012.
