6 people die in accidents across state

Cars went off roads in 3 wrecks, crossed centerline in 3 head-on collisions

Six people died in accidents on Arkansas roadways since Wednesday night, according to preliminary reports from the Arkansas State Police.

A Sheridan woman died Friday after the car she was driving crossed the centerline and hit another vehicle.

Karen Daniels, 52, was eastbound on Arkansas 270 in Grant County when her 2005 Hyundai struck a 1989 GMC about 10 a.m. Friday, state police reported. Daniels was ejected from the car. The GMC then went off the road and overturned, state police said.

The driver of the GMC, Jerry Stratton, 64, of Tillar, was reported to be injured but was not taken to a hospital, the report said.

An accident involving four vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, on a U.S. highway in Faulkner County left one man dead Thursday morning, police said.

It happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. when a northbound 2011 Chevrolet suddenly stopped in front of a 1985 Mack truck on U.S. 65 near an intersection with Stanford Road north of Conway, according to a state police report.

The truck then veered into the oncoming traffic lane and struck a 2001 Dodge heading south, state police said.

Attempting to avoid that collision, a southbound 2002 tractor-trailer swerved and ran into the Chevrolet and the truck, state police said.

The driver of the Dodge, Todd Johnston, 43, of Greenbrier, suffered fatal injuries, police said. No other injuries were reported.

A 40-year-old Earle woman died Thursday afternoon after her vehicle went off the road and hit a power pole, authorities said.

It happened shortly before 3 p.m. as Claudia Newsome was driving a 2004 Chevrolet east on U.S. 64B west of Earle, according to a state police report. Police said she drove off the road to the south and then back across it to the north before hitting the utility pole.

A Hot Springs Village man died in a single-vehicle accident in Garland County on Thursday afternoon.

Terry Rickard, 72, was driving east on Fox Pass Cutoff about 4:30 p.m. when he drove off the road, traveling along the ditch for a while before hitting an embankment, according to a state police report. The 2004 Honda Accord he was driving overturned, police said, and Rickard was killed.

A Jonesboro man died Thursday night after his vehicle crossed the centerline and hit a tractor-trailer head-on, police said.

Keith Spranger Jr., 56, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet north on Nestle Road in Jonesboro when his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, where it hit the truck, according to a state police report. The crash happened about 9:30 p.m. near Deer Lake Road.

The Craighead County coroner pronounced Spranger dead at the scene, authorities said. No one was reported as injured.

A Smithville woman died after her car veered off a roadway and struck a tree in Lawrence County on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

Stephanie Hufford, 35, of Smithville, was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix east on Arkansas 115 in Jessup around 6 p.m., according to a state police report. The Pontiac left the highway and hit a tree, police said.

Hufford suffered fatal injuries. No one else was reported injured.

Conditions were cloudy and dry at the time of Hufford's accident, police said. Conditions were listed as clear and dry at the time of all the other wrecks.
