Bailiff comes to woman's aid in Bentonville

BENTONVILLE -- A Benton County bailiff helped save a woman's life Thursday morning after she collapsed outside a courtroom.

Nathan Atchison, the bailiff for Circuit Judge Robin Green, came to Heather Mason's aid.

Mason, 31, was in stable condition Thursday afternoon at Northwest Medical Center-Bentonville, according to her attorney, Scott McElveen. He said Mason would probably be in the hospital a couple of days.

Green said a deputy opened the door and called for Atchison. Atchison said he left the courtroom and saw the woman's lips and face were purple. She had no pulse and wasn't breathing.

Atchison said he did about 30 chest compressions and was able to get a pulse.

Carrie Hobbs, deputy prosecutor, called 911 and relayed Atchison's actions to a dispatcher.

Atchison said Mason's breathing was weak and shallow when paramedics arrived.

The judge praised her bailiff and his actions.

"I am pleased, though not surprised, by bailiff Atchison's quick response and actions to save another's life today," Green said. "He is a outstanding law enforcement officer, and it is our honor to work with him."

Mason was to appear in court for a probation violation.

Atchison began as Green's bailiff in September. He was a longtime employee at the Benton County Sheriff's Office.
