Springdale Housing Authority member honored

SPRINGDALE -- A longtime housing authority member who resigned to care for his ailing wife was honored by his colleagues Wednesday.

The Springdale Housing Authority Board of Commissioners unanimously voted during its monthly meeting to recognize "20 years of outstanding service" from T.A. Brewer, a former First National Bank of Springdale vice president and former chairman of the authority board.

"He's been very instrumental," said Charles "Al" Hanby, housing authority board chairman. "He was very interested in providing housing for people that needed good, consistent, clean housing."

Brewer submitted his resignation to Mayor Doug Sprouse on Sept. 2.

"Due to my wife's poor health, I no longer can commit to the time requirements," Brewer stated in the letter. "I've enjoyed being on the commission for the past 20 years and wish everyone the best."

Brewer served on the board from 1992 to 2001 and from 2005 to his resignation. He was chairman during his first stint, said Debbie Bailey, housing authority executive director.

Brewer, whose resignation was effective when he submitted the letter, was not at the meeting.

The board has 60 days to fill the vacancy by submitting a candidate to the City Council, Hanby said. The board will brainstorm to come up with a replacement, Bailey said.

"You definitely want someone who's interested, because if they're not they won't be faithful," Bailey said.

The candidate needs to be involved in the city, Hanby said.

"We want people who are not on their own agenda, but interested in the good of the housing authority and the people who are served by the housing authority," Hanby said.
