Georgia man held in shooting in North Little Rock

A Georgia man is accused of shooting a man in the neck in North Little Rock on Tuesday night, police said.

Officers responded to a shooting call at 1424 Locust St. at 10:04 p.m., where they found Deon Luckett, 28, shot in the neck, according to a news release from North Little Rock police. Luckett was taken to the UAMS Medical Center for treatment, the release said.

Witnesses said a white man ran from the scene, police reported.

Police set up a perimeter around the shooting scene and arrested Leland Bennett, 30, of Nahunta, Ga., as a suspect in the case. He was charged with first-degree battery, police said.

Police reported that Bennett said he approached Luckett's car with a revolver in his pocket and that Luckett appeared to reach for a gun in the seat next to him. Authorities did not find a gun in Luckett's vehicle, police said.

Bennett said he was not trying to shoot Luckett but was attempting to shoot into his car, police said.

Bennett was listed on the Pulaski County jail's inmate roster Wednesday night.
