Nature center hosts family day

FORT SMITH -- The eighth annual Fab Five Challenge at Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center on Saturday focuses on five outdoor skills for youth.

The free event begins at noon and lasts until 4 p.m. Participants can test their mettle against a climbing wall, laser shot shooting simulator, BB gun range, target casting game and archery. The challenge celebrates National Hunting and Fishing Day.

Chad Lowe, education program specialist for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, said a large crowd is expected.

"Last year, we had 800 kids participate," Lowe said. "And this year, we've added a few new twists to make it more enjoyable for everyone."

A major change from last year is the elimination of the competitive portion of the event. This year's challenge will be more of a family oriented experience instead of only certain age groups being allowed.

"We want everyone in the family to learn these skills, not just the kids," Lowe said. "We also want people to enjoy these outdoors activities without feeling any pressure or disappointment from competition."

Lowe said the archery portion of the event has been expanded to include an aerial target challenge, where a machine will throw large foam targets into the air. Arrows with special fletching prevent the arrow from traveling far on a miss to increase safety.

Archers also will have a bowfishing experience on the shores of Wells Lake. Special targets make of foam noodles will be placed under the water for participants to aim at using bowfishing rigs.
