Contest focuses on mountain bikes

Junior and senior high school students across Arkansas have the opportunity this fall to take part in a writing contest that will promote mountain biking tourism.

The contest asks students to submit a 500-1,000 word essay on what they love about mountain biking in Arkansas. The Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and the Arkansas Department of Education are sponsoring the contest.

Students will compete for a $1,000 mountain bike package (bike and related gear) to be donated by The Walton Family Foundation.

"Mountain biking is one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in the country, and Arkansas is among the leading states in providing trails for mountain bikers," said Kane Webb, executive director of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism. "Travelers from across the globe have visited our state to ride its trails, bolstering the state's economy."

The prize package will be presented during the International Mountain Bicycling Association World Summit in Bentonville on Nov. 10-12. Weekend lodging and meals for the winner and a guest will be provided courtesy of the state's hospitality industry.

The contest is open to all junior and senior high school students in Arkansas. Information on how to enter has been sent to all junior and senior high schools in the state. For more information or to enter the contest, visit Arkansas.com.
