Barrier removal to shut I-49 lanes

Construction will require overnight lane closures on a section of Interstate 49 in Springdale for four nights beginning Tuesday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Continuing work to remove temporary barriers and place the final surface on lanes in both directions will require the median and outside lines to be alternately closed from south of U.S. 412 north to Elm Springs Road each night through Saturday, weather permitting.

The northbound lane closures will occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., while the southbound lanes will be closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., the department said. Traffic will be controlled using signs and barrels.

The work is part of a $21.6 million project to widen 3.4 miles of I-49 to six lanes from four between U.S. 412 and Wagon Wheel Road in Springdale. The project is anticipated to be complete later this year.
