Waterfowl blind to open

FAYETTEVILLE -- The City of Fayetteville will open the Mulhollan Waterfowl Blind at Lake Fayetteville at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The public is invited.

The blind is located on the south shore of Lake Fayetteville along the natural surface trail, west of the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. Parking is available at 4607 N. Crossover Road just south of the gardens parking lot. The walk from the parking lot should take about 15 minutes.

The blind project is a collaboration of the Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society, City of Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Department and the community at large.

The Audubon Society will host a field trip Saturday to the blind, meeting at 9 a.m. at the Botanical Gardens parking area. Waterfowl migration has started, and several species may be seen. Audubon membership isn't required to attend the trip.

The blind was designed by Michael Cockram of Bowerbird Designs and built in honor of the late Paige Mulhollan, along with his wife, Mary Bess Mulhollan, both long time birding enthusiasts.

Diverse species of waterfowl migrate through the Northwest Arkansas area starting in late October and several species stay most of the winter through mid-May. The waterfowl blind provides space for birdwatching -- many species are very wary of humans and are often hard to view without concealment.

The blind's interior is approximately 100 square feet with a ceiling height of twelve feet. It includes multiple viewing windows at varying heights, benches for seating, and display panels.
