Tar Heels stay tough on road

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Mitch Trubisky threw three touchdown passes and No. 22 North Carolina limited Virginia to one trick-play touchdown until the fourth quarter Saturday in a 35-14 victory.

Trubisky hit Bug Howard for 40 yards, Thomas Jackson for 10 yards and Austin Proehl for 46 yards for touchdowns for the Tar Heels (6-2, 4-1 ACC). North Carolina won its seventh consecutive in the series and ninth true road game in a row.

The Cavaliers (2-5, 1-2) got their first touchdown when they lined up for a field goal, had the entire offensive line split out far to the left, and snapper Evan Butts threw the snap 30 yards to his left to Matt Johns, the holder now acting as the quarterback. Johns then hit Butts for an 11-yard touchdown.

The Tar Heels led 14-7 at halftime and limited Virginia to 39 yards in the third quarter while opening a 28-7 lead.

In other games involving Atlantic Coast Conference teams, Lamar Jackson broke Louisville's single-season record with a hand in four first-half touchdowns, and the seventh-ranked Cardinals (6-1, 4-1) had three interceptions to burst past North Carolina State (4-3, 1-2) 54-13 in Louisville, Ky. Jackson threw three touchdown passes and had a 36-yard scoring run, giving him 34 TDs with five games to play. ... Eric Dungey threw for three touchdowns, Ervin Phillips had two more and Syracuse beat host Boston College 28-20, sending the Eagles to their 12th consecutive conference loss. Dungey went 32 for 38 for 434 yards. He also ran 17 times for 54 yards for the Orange (4-4, 2-2). Last week, he became the first player in school history to throw for over 300 yards and rush for over 100 in an upset victory over then-No. 17 Virginia Tech. Patrick Towles went 4 of 14 for 45 yards for Boston College (3-4, 0-4) but did run 75 yards for a touchdown. He was taken out of the game early in the fourth quarter and appeared to be favoring his right leg.
