Artists go 'About Face'

The University of Arkansas department of art will be hosting the exhibition "About Face" from Monday through Dec. 4 in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. A reception is planned for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, and a lecture by "About Face" artist Trenton Doyle Hancock will be held at Hillside Auditorium, Room 206, at 5:30 p.m.

"About Face" considers constructed identity (fictional and non-fictional) through narrative portraiture. Artists included in the exhibition utilize both traditional and nontraditional variations on this theme to create imagery and/or content within their work. Artists included in the exhibition are Hancock, Philip Guston, Rashid Johnson, Mary Reid Kelley, Arnold Kemp, Amy Pleasant and Carrie Mae Weems.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. All gallery programming is free and open to the public.

Writers' Colony hosts speaker

The Writers Colony at Dairy Hollow will host Alia Hamdan at 7 p.m. Monday at the Colony, located at 515 Spring St. in Eureka Springs. Hamdan will share stories of her travels and adventures in the ecosystems of Panama while taking part in an ecological study with Virginia Commonwealth University.

OLLI offers new classes

Classes offered by the Center for Lifelong Learning at the University of Arkansas include:

Tuesday: "The Visionary and His Vision" private tour of the Museum of Native American History in Bentonville with the founder David Bogle. Open to the public. $75 person/$140 couple.

Tuesday: "Murder & Mayhem: The Dark Side of Fayetteville's History" with Fayetteville author and historian Jerry Hogan. Members $21, nonmembers $36.

Wednesday: "Deep Inside Aging" a discussion of cellular aging. Members $19, nonmembers $34.

Wednesday: "Tea: Plantation to Palate." An investigation into the varieties and styles of tea. Members $25, nonmembers $40.

Thursday: "One Book, One Community: Just Mercy." David Jolliff leads the discussion of this One Book, One Community selection for 2016. $29 members, $44 nonmembers.

Dutch Oven seminar set

Devil's Den State Park will be holding a workshop of Dutch oven cooking from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The workshop will teach proper use and maintenance of the ovens and a three-course meal will be prepared.

The workshop is $20 for adults and $8 for children 6 to 12 years old. Adult price includes recipes and the meal. Child's price includes the meal. The best buy price of $90 includes the workshop fee, meal, cookbook and a five-quart Dutch oven.

Blood center seeks donors

Community Blood Center of the Ozarks is issuing an urgent appeal for all blood types. Current blood reserves are at critically low levels, with many types at less than a one-day supply.

Community Blood Center of the Ozarks will host blood drives at the following locations:

Kingston: 1-6 p.m. Tuesday, Kingston High School, Arkansas 74

Harrison: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Hillcrest Home, 1111 Maplewood Road

Pet health expo topic

The Animal League of Washington County will be hosting its annual Pet Wellness Expo from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Washington County Sheriff's Office annex building at 1155 Clydesdale in Fayetteville. The event offers low-cost vaccines and micro-chipping to all residents of Northwest Arkansas. Vaccines are $5 each and microchips are $10. The Expo is a community event helping those pet owners who cannot afford annual vaccines. Many local veterinarians donate their time to administer the vaccines at the expo. Information on low cost spay/neuter will also be available.

Poker run feeds needy

The "Get a Grip on Senior Hunger" Pedal Poker Run and pancake breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Springdale Senior Center, 203 Park St. This event will benefit all of the Washington County Meals on Wheels programs.

Registration is from 8 to 8:30 a.m., and the first bike will leave at 9 a.m. Participants will pay $20 per hand in advance, $25 per hand on the day of the event, and extra hands will cost $5 upon entry.

Mental health seminar set

The Alzheimer's Association will present the free "Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters" workshop from 11 a.m. to noon Nov. 2 at the Bentonville Public Library. The workshop will provide an understanding of the difference between age-related memory loss and Alzheimer's and what to do if someone has signs of the disease. There will be video footage of real people who are living with the early stages of dementia and their families addressing fears and myths associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's will be topic

The Alzheimer's Association will present an Alzheimer's Research Update hosted by the Schmieding Center for Senior Health & Education from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 3 at 2422 N. Thompson St. in Springdale.

The presentation will feature Dr. Heather Snyder, senior director of medical and scientific operations for the Alzheimer's Association. Snyder's presentation will focus on current developments in the area of Alzheimer's research.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend, however space is limited to the first 125 people.
