Literacy

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation announced the allocation of local literacy grants to area organizations to support youth literacy. These grants are part of more than $4.5 million in youth literacy grants awarded to approximately 1,000 organizations across the 43 states that Dollar General serves.

Local grant recipients include Donald W. Reynolds Boys & Girls Club, Fayetteville, $4,000; LifeSource International, Fayetteville, $4,000; and Helen Tyson Middle School, Springdale, $3,800.

Regional Food Bank

OK Foods has announced a long-term partnership with the River Valley Regional Food Bank in Fort Smith. The partnership begins with a five-year commitment to provide 500,000 pounds of chicken products to the food bank, the largest commitment in OK Foods history.

Sebastian County has a child food insecurity rate of 30 percent, totaling 6,700 children in Fort Smith alone. The RVRFB, in conjunction with the Crawford-Sebastian County Community Development Council, is currently renovating a recently donated facility.

The new facility will allow the RVRFB to increase its capacity to service food pantries and feeding agencies across its seven county region.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army had 20 teams participate in the afternoon flight of the eighth annual Charity Golf Tournament, which brought in $7,000.

The 20 teams were Arvest Bank, Bill Copelin, C.R. Crawford Construction, Chambers Bank, Crossover True Value, Eaton, Elliott Electric Supply, Fellowship Church in Fayetteville, Flake & Kelley Commercial, J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc., KNWA - Northwest Arkansas News, Lindsey Management, Michelle Copelin, Northwest Electric, P&G, Rexel, Roger Cunningham, Rose Electric and WIN Electric.

After 18 holes of golf, Lindsey Management clenched first place in the 2016 tournament.

Meals on Wheels

The Meals on Wheels organization in Springdale has been serving meals to the elderly and needy in Springdale for more than 30 year and currently provides more than 1,500 meals per week. One-half of the money needed for operation is provided by the federal government, while the other half is raised through donations -- around $250,000 each year.;

The Seventies Reunion is a small group that organizes a yearly reunion for Springdale High School graduating classes 1970 thru 1979. This year's event -- the eighth annual -- was held July 23 at the Elks Lodge in Fayetteville. The group raised $2,000, the largest donation from a small independent group this year. The presentation of the check was made Sept. 22.

Children's Shelter

GlitchCon Charity Auction exceeded its goal of raising more than $2,000 for the Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter at their sixth annual convention held July 29-31.

The check was presented by Terra Brace, director of finance for Glitchcon, and Katherine Alldredge, Charity Auction chairman, at the Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter on Sept. 15.

John Brown University

John Brown University's Walton Lifetime Health Complex renovation project received a $25,000 gift from Arvest Bank, adding to the $5 million renovation goal.

The renovation, which will be completed this year, includes a new entrance on the north side for better community access, expanded fitness areas with new equipment, updated HVAC system, new locker rooms, and refurbished pool mechanical systems with new decking.

The Arvest Bank gift is a part of the university's $125 million Campaign for the Next Century. JBU has currently raised more than $96 million toward the $125 million goal and plans to complete the campaign on JBU's centennial in 2019.

Children’s

Northwest

The second Miracles and Magic Radiothon benefiting Arkansas Children’s Hospital raised $37,235 in just two days towards the construction of Arkansas Children’s Northwest.

Magic 107.9 on-air talent Jay Steele, Dawn McCollough and Jim Bodine broadcast live from the station from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 6 and 7. The Miracles and Magic Radiothon was presented by Honda of Fayetteville and made possible by the generous support of Magic 107.9, the I Heart Media family, and the Circle of Friends Northwest Arkansas Chapter. All money raised stays in Northwest Arkansas.

Food Bank

Tyson Foods donated 50,000 pounds of protein to the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank Sept. 28 at Veterans Memorial Park in Fayetteville. Beginning in June, more than 500 Tyson Foods team members participated in the program by walking, running or cycling on the Razorback Greenway. For every mile completed, Tyson pledged to donate one pound of protein to the food bank, up to 50,000 pounds.
