Backhoe accident injures UA worker

FAYETTEVILLE -- A University of Arkansas employee was injured in a backhoe accident early Tuesday afternoon, officials said Tuesday.

Chris Marshall, 59, of Fayetteville, an agricultural technician, was pinned to a fence by the backhoe's front tire after it rolled forward, according to a news release from the university.

A back tire of the backhoe also rolled over Marshall's legs. The accident occurred near Agri Park at the dead end of Leverett Avenue, said Dale Riggins, Fire Department administrative assistant and retired captain. Riggins said Tuesday the man possibly had a broken leg and was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center.

The employee was trying to mend a fence but ended up pinned by his backhoe to the fence, said Steve Voorhies, a university spokesman.

A passer-by biking on the Meadow Valley Trail saw Marshall and called 911, said Vaughn Skinner, director of the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center.

Marshall was discharged from the hospital late Tuesday afternoon.

The area where the accident occurred is on Arkansas Agricultural Research & Extension Center property, just north of where Leverett Avenue ends.
