Charity fish fry set for Friday at arena

It's almost time for Brother Paul's 30th annual Fish and Fowl Dinner, a community event to benefit the soup kitchen at Friendly Chapel Church of the Nazarene, 116 S. Pine St.

This year's all-you-can-eat dinner will be 5-8 p.m. Friday at Verizon Arena.

The dinner draws a few thousand patrons annually, with hundreds of volunteers -- including some elected city officials -- working as servers and to clean up.

The dinner began in 1987 as a fundraiser for the church. Paul Holderfield Jr., the church's pastor, took over the tradition in 1998 after the death of his father, "Brother Paul" Holderfield, a pastor and a former city firefighter who founded the church in 1972.

Adult tickets are $15 each or $120 for a book of 10. Tickets for children ages 5-12 are $6 at the door for dine-in only. Takeout dinners also will be available.

Tickets and more information are available by contacting Friendly Chapel at (501) 371-0912.

Old engine No. 844 to steam in for visit

Union Pacific's No. 844 steam locomotive, known as the Living Legend, will make a brief stop in the city Oct. 24 as part of its first multistate journey since a three-year restoration.

No. 844, a high-speed passenger engine, was the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad, delivered in 1944. After being placed in freight service in Nebraska from 1957 to 1959, the engine was saved from being scrapped in 1960 and traveled the country as a marketing tool for the railroad.

The locomotive is traveling 1,200 miles one way on Union Pacific's main line from Wyoming to be at the Saturday opening of Big River Crossing in Memphis. The Living Legend will stop for public display during its return trip, at 2:15 p.m. Oct. 24 at 1000 W. Fourth St.

Other Arkansas stops will be Thursday in Piggott, Paragould and Harrisburg, then Oct. 24 in Wynne and Bald Knob before it reaches Fourth Street.

The locomotive then will stop in Conway, Russellville and Van Buren on Oct. 25. A full schedule of the journey, including route map, stop locations and display times, is available by visiting up.com/aboutup and clicking on the "Train Pride" icon.

The 19-day trip will go through Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Oklahoma.
