Prosecutors won't pursue charges against Benton County sheriff candidate

BENTONVILLE — Prosecutors will not pursue criminal charges against Glenn Latham, a candidate for Benton County sheriff, according to Nathan Smith.

Smith, Benton County’s prosecuting attorney, announced Monday his decision to not seek any charges against Latham as result of an investigation by the Arkansas State Police.

Smith previously said the investigation was started by State Police and didn't come from his office.

Smith sent a letter Monday to the special agent assigned to the case. Smith states in the letter that it is insufficient evidence to conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that Latham committed a criminal offense.

Smith also stated the person making the allegations that prompted the investigation recanted when she spoke with investigators.

Latham is the independent candidate for sheriff in the Nov. 8 election. Shawn Holloway is his opponent. Holloway won the Republican nomination in March over then-Sheriff Kelley Cradduck.

Holloway is chief deputy at the Benton County Sheriff's Office. He couldn't be reached Tuesday for a comment on the police investigation of Latham.
