HOT SPRINGS -- The Hot Springs Hotel Men's Association, at its meeting tonight, attacked the Garland County Medical Society. In a resolution unanimously adopted the members deplored the letters of "threat, criticism and censure," said to have been sent Arkansas United States senator and congressmen, because, it is said, they interceded for a physician who was charged with violating federal regulations at Hot Springs.

• Little Rock is going to get one of the new self-service postoffices that the Post Office Department is installing at 100 locations across the nation, Postmaster Roy L. Sharpe said Thursday. It will be the only one in Arkansas. The new K-mart Shopping Center at the southwest corner of Asher and University Avenues has donated space for the postoffice in its parking area. Installation will begin about October 15, Sharpe said. The unit is to be ready for use November 5.

• Once a bustling center of open drug dealing, the corner of Sixth and Harrington streets was described recently by one Little Rock police officer as "almost a ghost town." A major factor in the change, police say, is the recent arrests of several members of the Leavy family. The officer testified at a Pulaski County Chancery Court hearing last week that police suspect the Leavys of being "some of the major drug dealers in Little Rock."

• Little Rock officials are talking about renovating the Riverfest Amphitheatre, giving it a new multimillion-dollar roof and, they hope, a busier schedule of events. The changes could include new management from within the city and a shift from being primarily a music venue to also accommodating business conferences. As newer concert venues like Alltel Arena in North Little Rock compete with the amphitheater for entertainment acts, city officials say they want to raise a new roof over the stage and make it more comfortable to use in rainy weather. "If we leave it like it is, nobody's going to come," at-large City Director Dean Kumpuris said at a city Advertising and Promotion Commission meeting earlier this month.
