Saints golfers go long for state title

Shiloh Christian’s boys claims second championship in three years

Long drives made Shiloh Christian's long drive to Stuttgart worthwhile as the Saints won the Class 4A State Boys Golf Championship on Tuesday.

It was the team's second state title in three years and third in the program's history, with the first coming in 2006. It was Shiloh Christian's 40th state championship for all sports combined.

After Monday's practice round at Stuttgart Country Club, Shiloh Christian coach Ron Somers said the course set up perfectly for the Saints' foursome, a group of upperclassmen capable of hitting long tee shots.

"And they did hit it long all over the course," Somers said.

Canon Cothran was runner-up for champion medalist -- awarded to the top individual finisher -- by shooting a 75 on the Par-72 course. Warren's Hayden Lassiter shot a sizzling 69.

Cothran, a senior, was champion medalist when the Saints won state in 2014. He drained a few long putts to go along with his long drives on Tuesday to lead his team to the six-stroke win with a 235. Mena was second with a 241.

"(Cothran) said he probably made 200 yards of putts to save par -- and he saved a lot of pars," Somers said. "He played well and they all played really well."

Saints juniors Garrett Covington and Michael Connolly made 4A All-State by shooting 78 and 82, respectively. Somers said senior Jake Gearhart felt like "the odd man out" despite shooting a "very solid round of 85" because it didn't count toward the overall team standings.

Somers is in his first year at Shiloh Christian after spending 17 years coaching prep golf in Lewisville, Texas.

"I think (former Saints golf) coach Jordan Cox did a wonderful job of preparing these kids," Somers said. "He laid the groundwork and I just happened to come along at the right time.

"So I feel very honored and very thankful. And, really grateful I didn't mess them up."

Pea Ridge finished fifth (264) in the team standings as Tyler Wallace fired an 84 and Hunter Gatson came in with an 89.
