Groups take on breast cancer

Golf tournament supports youth programming at Jones Center

The Chase Family Foundation played host to Support the Girls on Sept. 22 at Springdale Country Club. Guests brought new or gently used bras to be donated to women at the Northwest Arkansas Women's Shelter and Peace at Home Family Shelter.

The evening included the auction of a dinner for eight with five courses cooked by a female team of local chefs. The chefs include Maudie Schmitt, Cafe Rue Orleans; Micah Spears-Blackmon, Early Bird Catering; Sarah Chase, Eleven; Chrissy Sanderson, Mockingbird Kitchen; and Anne Carroll, The Farmers Table Cafe.

Proceeds from the auction will support research for breast cancer, cancer and other diseases conducted by research firm Ascendant DX in Springdale.

Susan G. Koman -- Ozark Affiliate welcomed sponsors, board members and other VIPs for the Pinktail Par-tee that same evening at Shadow Valley Country Club in Rogers ahead of the Swing for the Cure golf tournament the next day.

Lauren Marquette, affiliate executive director, told those gathered that "Komen has a huge goal to decrease breast cancer mortality by 50 percent in 10 years." Seventy-five percent of the money the affiliate raises stays in Northwest Arkansas and 25 percent goes toward funding research. Locally, the money is used to help women in a variety of ways, such as securing mammograms, providing gas cards to help patients travel to treatment and breast health navigators, and with treatment costs for under- or uninsured.

Next up for the affiliate is the Pink Ribbon Luncheon on Oct. 20.

Among those at the Par-tee were Mary Zettle, Kari and Brandon Nikolish, Mike Turner, Kindra Kilker, Whitney May, Sue and Charles Redfield, Betsy Reithemeyer and Shelli and Tony Engle.

The Jones Center hosted the 10th annual Golf Event on Sept. 26 at the Springdale Country Club. The benefit golf tournament included golf clinics led by Brooke Pancake, LPGA pro, and helped raise more than $175,000 for youth programming at the nonprofit organization.

Al Dominguez, John George, Kelli Gemmell, Joe Farnan, Ron Brophy, Tony Engle, Alex Cornett, Matt Brown, Corey Bender and Casey Rivard supported the Jones Center.

The center will play host to Big Night in Chicago -- The Windy City on Oct. 29.
