Defense does trick for Hot Springs Lakeside

HOT SPRINGS -- The Lakeside Rams added defense and ball control to the mix -- and won again.

Dupree Swanson scored all three Lakeside touchdowns, two on long drives after Magnolia fumbles, in the Rams' victory Friday night at Austin Field.

Lakeside, which beat Camden-Fairview 52-48 last Friday, led 14-0 at halftime.

Swanson's 27-yard run and Philip Gayle's third extra point made it 21-0 with 1:55 gone in the third quarter.

. Magnolia, scoreless for its first seven quarters against 5A-South opponents, scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, Parker Ribble passing 17 yards to Kadyn Roach on fourth and goal and 63 yards to Mikosky Jones.

Cruz Guzman kicked one extra point for Magnolia but had his second attempt blocked by Jack Henry Hill, leaving Magnolia in need of a touchdown and two-point conversion. Lakeside's Logan Gower snuffed out the Panthers' hopes with an interception in the end zone.

Lakeside (2-4, 2-0 5A-South) plays White Hall at home next week.

Lakeside drove 92 and 54 yards for touchdowns in the first half on drives lasting 14 plays for 7:24 and 15 plays for 8:22. Swanson went over from 5 yards out with 1:31 left in the first quarter and on a 2-yard run with 3:38 left in the first half.

Magnolia (1-3, 0-2) had its best early chance end when Guzman's 40-yard field-goal attempt came up short.

Swanson finished with 39 carries for 162 yards. Fisher Alexander went seven of eight passing for 69 yards, Caleb Dean with six catches for 61 yards. Magnolia outgained Lakeside by 70 yards in the second half and finished with a 267-251 advantage.
