Gas leak causes of evacuation of Bentonville preschool

BENTONVILLE — Children were evacuated Tuesday morning from the Bentonville Church of the Nazarene preschool building after a nearby gas leak.

Marcus Williams, a battalion chief with the Bentonville Fire Department, said they received a call at 8:48 a.m. concerning a natural gas leak on Northwest Third Street.

The leak was caused by a construction crew working in the area, according to Williams.

“We had to evacuate the school and shut the power down,” Williams said.

The students were moved to the Bentonville Church of the Nazarene.

Workers with Black Hills Energy and firefighters worked to stop the leak.

Williams said it wasn’t necessary to evacuate nearby homes because of the high winds.

Firefighters and the gas crew had meters placed along Main Street to detect the gas levels. Williams said they would have had to evacuate the area if the levels had reached a certain point.

Williams said firefighters had to clear the building of the gas before children could return to the school.
